ASB Glasgow

As Creative Director for Abandon Ship Bars, my role was to maximise creativity for the launch of our largest venue in Glasgow in 2021. This all-encompassing project allowed me to shape every aspect of the bar, from interiors and uniforms to merchandise, menus, and events, leaving a distinct creative stamp across the entire space.

For the interiors, I hand-painted over 100 square metres of artwork within a month, weaving my personal style and references into the bar’s DNA. The murals were designed to draw attention and reveal new details or jokes with every visit. Watching customers spot something amusing and share the moment with friends was incredibly rewarding. I also collaborated with a neon signage company to create striking, custom pieces based on my designs. One standout was the “Loose Lips Drown Ships” neon installation on the staircase, featuring animated drips and vibrant colours, complemented by a dramatic monochrome mural using white ink on black for contrast. Other bespoke touches included custom wallpaper for the toilets, decals like “A Few Regrets” behind the bar, and a photobooth for our arcade area, where I later learned someone proposed—an unforgettable detail that made the project even more special.

Another unique feature was the merchandise area, “The Pickleshack,” which doubled as a quick-service bar for shots and locally brewed canned beers that I designed in collaboration with a brewery. The Pickleshack also showcased exclusive merchandise, from glassware and T-shirts to custom toilet rolls. All designed and produced by myself.

To develop the visual identity of the bar, I designed Hawaiian shirts for staff uniforms and aprons for the kitchen team, creating a cohesive yet playful aesthetic. I oversaw the design of menus, greaseproof paper, and food packaging, ensuring consistency in every detail. One highlight was a hand-painted Jägermeister machine for the back bar, a fun and memorable touch.

The bar's launch was a roaring success, thanks to a partnership with a local PR agency to bring the vision to life. Guests enjoyed nail stations in the ladies’ toilets, celebrity DJs, caricature artists, and even a tarot reader, creating a lively and immersive experience.

This project required a collaborative effort, but my creative vision was unmistakable throughout the venue. From the intricate details to the high level of execution, I’m proud of what we achieved and the lasting impact this space has had on its customers.
